Dear Neediest Kids:

My primary work is with homeless students who do not reside with a parent or legal guardian. Many of these homeless unaccompanied youth are self supporting, living on their own while taking rigorous courses to complete high school and transition into college. These students often find themselves caught between working and having enough time to go to a public facility which will allow them use of a computer. For these students having timely access to a computer is not a luxury but a necessity to balance their time between their essential employment and homework completion.

With your kind donation of funding, we were able to purchase three netbook computers. This means that three high school seniors, who happen to be homeless unaccompanied youth, will not only be able to complete their high school course work, but also have a computer to take with them to college.

Thank you for not only providing homeless students with the opportunity to competitively complete their high school course work, but also allowing them to achieve their dreams of going on to college after graduation. With the opportunity of being adequately prepared for college—knowledge and computer, these students have a much higher chance of breaking the cycle of poverty and moving on to being successful contributing community members.

Sometimes the little things can bring about great change in a child’s life. We know with preparation and education, children have the ability to overcome tremendous circumstances. Thank you for providing computers which will afford hard working students the opportunity to move towards a positive future.

Sincerely Grateful,

School Social Worker, Homeless Liaison’s Office, Fairfax County Public Schools

There is a happy buzz as 300 donors, friends, and children break their New Year’s Resolutions and indulge their sweet tooth at the inaugural Decadent Delights.

To our many wonderful sponsors, all of whom are listed here, we give heartfelt thanks for their outstanding generosity which enabled Neediest Kids to raise more than $143,000 to provide low-income children with the basic necessities they urgently need. We also thank the many volunteers who made this event such an extraordinary success, including co-chairs Julie Raffensperger and Joan Vassos, and cake guru Cathy Janus.

Twas the night before Christmas
At Neediest Kids’ house
Not a creature was stirring
Not even a mouse

For Neediest Kids
Had done what it does
Helped thousands of children
But only because

Our funders, our friends
Our board of directors
Generously gave
Their time and their treasures

Along with our schools
We enabled so many
To obtain all the basics
Though they had not a penny

Allie got glasses
So now she could read
For Dave, a warm jacket
He surely did need

Thanks to your help
Neediest Kids did bestow
A new backpack to Jill
And sneakers to Joe.

Heartfelt thanks goes to you
Who helped kids in need
Get the basic essentials
So in school they’ll succeed

Nonprofit organizations love December; tis the season of giving. The pretty lights strung on homes, trees decked out in gold and glitter, and brightly polished menorahs inspire folks to share their holiday joy by giving to their favorite charity. Neediest Kids is no different, and we love this month, when the mail is full of generous checks and our online account sends us frequent emails notifying us of another donation made through our website. We are truly grateful for each and every contribution.

And those contributions are more important than ever. Yes, I know. Every charity says that, but truly, your support is critical. Our partner schools are providing students with twice as many basic essentials this school year as they did during the start of the pervious school year. Our school partners tell us that they are experiencing unprecedented requests for eyeglasses, warm coats, new clothing and shoes, groceries, toiletries, school supplies, and uniforms for their low-income students.

In advance, thank you for sharing the holiday spirit by supporting Neediest Kids
